Bio.
Alice began her education as a multi-disciplinary Fine artist however, in 2020, she became more lens based, finding the camera to be her most authentic way to engage with her thoughts about the world. Her interest in photography coincided with a liberation from her rural upbringing and moving to the more populated Bournemouth, for an art foundation at Arts Uni Bournemouth, and subsequently Brighton, to study BA photography at the University of Brighton.
She was nominated for the Platform Graduate Award in 2024 by CVAN South East and Phoenix Artspace, which resulted in select works from her series ‘There Is No Arriving,’ being displayed in a group exhibition at Phoenix Artspace. She also exhibited work on Brighton beachfront, part of Dreamy Place Festival 2023, in partnership with Photoworks.
Statement.
Triff’s practice is varied. Recent projects have been driven by an interest in our exploration of the spaces we inhabit and the politics of the British landscape. Her interest originates from growing up in a conservative and isolated village in Oxfordshire. Her work critiques contemporary culture, which insists on prescribing us a version of how to behave in rural spaces. Her work about the British countryside defamiliarizes place to reactivate the viewers curiosity and the method of obtaining the images often has a performative element, relating to the themes in the work, such as trespass.
Her recent series ‘There Is No Arriving’ thematically varies from previous work. Conceptually uncertain and more bizarre the staged compositions enact certain meanings beyond their own realities.
Triff approaches picture making with thoughtful contemplation, resulting in carefully crafted scenes with a strongly independent aesthetic.
